Affirmations

To make changes to old thought patterns, you firstly need to be aware of them.  Once you notice the old thought pattern creeping in e.g. I'm not good enough/I always fail, you can change it for a more beneficial one that will help you to achieve your goal.

You can learn any habit in 20 days - just by practising something for 20 days you create neural pathways in your brain, making the activity automatic (unless you decide to change it or circumstances mean you don't keep doing it).  An affirmation is a great tool for helping you to replace old thought patterns for new ones because they are short and easy to learn, created by you and relevant to you.

Affirmations are positive statements made in the present tense which reflect your goal or an aspect of your goal as if it has already happened/is already true.  This is so that your subconscious mind accepts the statement and works to make it happen.

Affirmations work by programming your subconscious brain to make changes in your belief system which then enables you to create a change in your behaviour.  They are best recited morning and night as well as anytime during the day when it is safe to do so and when you notice the old belief system (that you wish to change) creeping in.

Example

Problem:  I can’t seem to lose weight, diets always fail and I just feel terrible about myself.  How can I love myself when I’m not who I want to be?

Affirmation:  I’m so grateful for all that my body does for me, I listen to respond to its needs with joy.

When you have created your affirmation using your own words, it’s a good idea to write down or think about all that it means to you.  Using the example above, you may want to write down what it is your body does for you and what you are grateful for.  It coud be that you are grateful for being able to walk and move around so that you have the ability to get rid of the excess weight.  You may also want to write down what needs you may be listening out for like how food makes you feel or that moment when you are satisfied before you are full.

Tips on creating your affirmation
  • Make it short and easy to remember
  • Make it meaningful to you
  • Make sure it’s in the present tense without words such as try, will, should, when, if…
  • Make sure you use only positive words rather than words like not(if you say to yourself I’m not fat, your subconscious mind will only hear the words I’m fat!)
  • Write it down in a big and colourful way to get the creative side of your brain really going.
  • Have a go at standing in front of a mirror whilst smiling and saying your affirmation with meaning
  • You can even sing your affirmation if you feel inspired!

Examples of affirmations

I am filled with love for all that is around me

I respect others and see situations from a fresh perspective

I believe in myself and succeed in each new challenge

I am strong and secure

I am calm and confident in all that I do

I cherish each day and give thanks for all the blessings in my life

I choose to focus on the good in life

I forgive myself and others

I choose to see others with understanding and compassion

I do what is good and right for me

I take action to achieve my goals

I love and accept myself right now

I am filled with energy, vitality and a sense of self-esteem

I choose to feel peaceful and in control

I’m enjoying getting rid of that excess weight

I’m enjoying eating consciously and savouring my food

I love challenges and embrace them

I enjoy looking after my body and it loves me looking after it

I let go of the past, enjoy the now and trust in my higher self to guide me

I let go of fear and embrace love

I am enjoying my journey of self discovery

I appreciate myself more and more with each day

Beliefs

What do you think of when you hear the word 'belief'?  What are your beliefs?
Often in society, when we first think of beliefs, we think about our religious or spiritual viewpoint.  But what if belief is just a word to describe anything that you think is a fact or 'reality'?
Let's take an example of a made up person called Bob.  Bob has a set of beliefs about himself:
  • He is not good enough to succeed
  •  He should work hard all the time
  • He will always have less money than he needs
  • He is not a lucky person
  • He needs to be realistic about his expectations so he doesn't get disappointed
  • Bad things always happen to him
  • He has no power to change anything
Bob has a set of beliefs about other people:
  • They are basically selfish and out to get what they can
  • You can't trust them
  • They always let you down
  • They don't care about him
  • They never change
  •  They are always better off than him
  • Happy/positive people are fools
Bob has a set of beliefs about the world he lives in:
  • Money is bad
  • The world bad - it's full of hate and suffering
  • There is no point to life
  • Life is a struggle
  • There is never enough
  • It's kill or be killed
  • Nothing ever changes
Do you see a theme here?  Can you imagine for a minute what Bob's day to day experience of life would be?  Do you know anyone like Bob, or do some of his beliefs resonate with you?
Based on those beliefs, Bob's reality is probably not a very nice one.  He is powerless, helpless and hopeless.  It raises the question of how he ended up this way, and the answer comes from his subconscious mind.  We all have a massive computer in our heads which contains programs that tell us who we are and what our beliefs are.

A lot of programming goes on without our knowledge up to the age of seven.  As we get older we become 'conscious' thinkers and have more say in the programs we want to keep, change or create - as long as we realise we have the ability to do this.  Bob hasn't realised he has the power to choose who he wants to be or how he wants to feel.  His beliefs are his reality and because he lives in such a closed world, it will be difficult for him to change unless something major happens that shifts his perspective.
Often people have a shift in perspective when faced with great trauma or great changes in their lives.  Often (as studies show) this shift will be for the better - they will enjoy life more, cherish it, look at what they have rather than what they don't have and basically they will have a richer, fuller experience of life that is of their choosing.
The great thing about being conscious beings is that we can make choices and although we have many strong programs in our minds that create our behaviour in our day to day lives, we also have the ability to take a step back and observe this behaviour.  Once we have noticed and question what we think, how we feel and how we behave, we can decide to make changes to anything we don't like through finding ways to interrupt the old thought/feeling/behaviour and replacing it with one we consciously prefer (something that feels right/good).
Let's take a look at another made up person, called Meg.  Meg has a set of beliefs that are a bit different from Bob's:
Meg believes:
  • The world is always changing so there is always hope
  • Although some horrible things happen in life, there is an abundance of good to focus on
  • Spreading love, happiness and joy to friends, family, even strangers makes life all the more rich and full
  • You can make the most of your experiences whether they are seemingly good or bad
  • It's best to enjoy yourself and find the fun in life
  • Habits may be hard to break sometimes but perseverance and trial and error will win out (where there's a will there's a way)
  • There may be challenges to overcome along the road to success and you may adjust your path along the way but you can always succeed in your true goals
  • People aren't perfect but they are generally good
  • Everyone has a different perspective so there's no point judging people by your own expectations
Now consider the kind of life you think Meg would lead.  Do you think she has had more or less trauma in her life than Bob?  What leads you to that conclusion?  Do any of her beliefs resonate with you?  Would you like to be more like Meg but don't know how?

Laughter

"I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose". Woody Allen.

Before I start I'd like to apologise for last week's blog - for some reason when it was published, half of the content vanished into cyber space, never to return!  I think blogger has sorted itself out now so this week should promise to be a full length blog! (I will return to the issue of forgiveness at some point in the future)

Ok, so onto the theme of today - laughter.  In honour of my guest, Joe Hoare who'll be speaking on the next PPUK Show in November (details below), I thought I'd give you some useful information about the free and readily available therapy of laughter.

Laughter is a great healer and is used as such by the inspirational doctor; Patch Adams (played by Robin Williams in the 1998 Hollywood film).  He believes that laughter and happiness are key to health and wellbeing and he does great work teaching, speaking and giving free medical care to patients in the US.

"In this life he who laughs longest laughs last". John Masefield.

If you want to feel instantly relaxed, laughter is the most efficient method you can use because it causes all the muscles in the body to release energy.

Laughter and its little sister Smiling, can be enjoyed by yourself or in a group and both have many health benefits including lower blood pressure and reducing pain.  Regular laughter can also help; boost your immune system, reduce stress hormones and increase happy healthy hormones.  And it's really good for your heart and gives you relief from stored emotions.

The trick with laughter is getting into the habit of doing it often.  Sometimes life can seem to stressful and too serious and we forget how to really let go and laugh.  One thing Joe Hoare taught me on one of his Laughter workshops is to 'fake it til you make it' and this is about physically making yourself laugh on a regular basis to help you to make it a habit in your life.  I will suggest some ideas of ways you can make the most of this fantastic, free and funny little therapy.

1. When you wake up, make yourself laugh really loudly - try going 'ha ha ha', 'hee hee hee' or whatever works for you.  Look in the mirror while you do this and pull funny faces at yourself.  If you live with someone, get them to join in or make them laugh through the power of your sillyness!

2. Look up jokes on the internet or buy a joke book and share them with others; like these ones from Tommy Cooper:

So I said to the taxi driver, 'King Arthur's Close'. He said,
'Don't worry, we'll lose him at the next set of lights'

I went to the doctor. He said 'you've got a very serious illness'.
I said 'I want a second opinion'.
He said 'all right, you're ugly as well'.

I hurt my back the day.
I was playing piggy back with my 6 year old nephew, and I fell off.

A waiter asks a man, 'May I take your order, sir?'
'Yes,' the man replies. 'I'm just wondering, exactly how do you prepare your chickens?'
'Nothing special, sir. We just tell them straight out that they're going to die.

Deja Moo: The feeling that you've heard this bullshit before

3. Look up funny videos on the internet and share them with others. There should be something for every sense of humour like animal ones or funny adverts (you can try YouTube or Yahoo or just search for funny video clips).

4. Watch funny programmes or films.  This is great to do by yourself or with others.

5. Pay attention to find the humour in your day to day life - there are so many things that we might see or do that can make us smile or laugh.  If something funny happens, share it with someone.  Sometimes you need a fresh perspective to find the funny in life and when you do it can be uplifting and enlightening.  Consider how you view your life - do you have fun?  Do you take time to be silly and release your inner child?  What difference does that make to your experience of life?  Sometimes we need to go back to basics and review our belief systems to make the most of our time here on earth.

6. Attend a Laughter class or workshop like the one run by Joe Hoare in Bristol.  You may also want to check out Joe's fun stuff page on his website right now - I love the quirky signs from around the world!...

The important thing to remember is to find what works for you - discover for yourself ways you can make your heart a little lighter that bring you back into the present moment, free from conscious worries about the future or the past.

"To laugh totally is not only to be inwardly blessed, but to heal inwardly, profoundly"  Alison Stormwolf

Forgiveness

Isn't it your right not to forgive, when you have been so badly wronged?
Maybe, but forgiveness can be a great healer for the person who has been wronged.  I have experience of it, and I have seen it in others.  It may be one of the most difficult things to do and perhaps that it is why it is one of the most powerful.
Understanding more about what forgiveness means may help you to decide if it is something you will benefit from.  First of all, let's look at what forgiveness isn't:
Forgiveness is not about reconcilliation and it completely depends on your situation as to whether that would be something else you would want to explore.
Forgiveness is not the act of condoning what someone has done.
Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness.
I believe forgiveness is about taking back your power because as long as you harbour resentment, anger, hurt and pain, you are connected to the person who made you feel that way.
