Smiling

Are you someone that smiles all the time?  Or perhaps you save smiling for special occasions.  You may not be aware of how much you smile in any given day but there are some very good reasons why increasing the amount you smile could benefit your health and wellbeing.

Of course we can all subconsciously tell the difference between a fake smile and real one so learning how to bring on a genuine smile will benefit you much more than slapping on a false grin.  A true smile fills your heart and reaches your eyes.  A false smile will leave the eyes dull and without the tell tale creases of a true one. 

So how can you quickly and easily bring on a genuine smile?  Well the first thing you need to consider is your posture.  Do you go about your day with your head held high and your eyes up, taking in all that is around you?  Or do you tend to look at the ground with your shoulders slumped seeing only the next step ahead? 

Try this little visualisation exercise to help you instantly create a smile from your heart:
 
Sit up straight (or stand) with your head up and shoulders back.  Close your eyes or look up into the distance not really focussing on what you can see.  Think of a memory or create a happy daydream of something that makes you feel peaceful or joyful or blissful. 
Make it as clear in your mind as you can, bringing in all your senses (sight, sound, touch, smell) until you trigger the feelings you need that spark a genuine smile.  You may find the visuals are strongest, or it may be a sound that triggers it for you - just play around with it in your mind until you find out what works best.  
Once you get the hang of this exercise you can use the trigger to help you to smile more in your day and to pick you up when you feel deflated or uninspired.

To help inspire you to smile more in your day, I'm going to give you seven facts about the amazing power and effect of the very simple act of smiling:

1. It increases the production of endorphins (the happy chemicals) in the brain, giving you an instant boost.

2. It increases the function of your immune system, helping you ward off coughs and colds.

3. It reduces your blood pressure.

4. It reduces the production of cortisol in the brain which is the stress hormone.

5. Being mindful of your posture and creating a genuine smile, shifts you into a positive state.  It's impossible to feel down when you sit up, look up and smile - try it now!

6. It makes you look younger and more good looking!

7. Others respond better to you; they subconsciously trust you more and think more highly of you when you smile. 

So why not start creating your habit of happiness now through the simple act of smiling more?  It only takes twenty days to form a habit, making it subconscious or automatic and you may be surprised just how much it can benefit you.
