Procrastination

"I just can't bring myself to do it right now but I can't stop worrying about it either.  I keep thinking 'I should be doing it' and then end up beating myself up for not having done it already!"
Does the above sentence sound familiar?  Can you think of any examples in your life right now of something you are putting off and dread the thought of doing?  If there's more than one, you may want to jot them down so that you can think about each one in turn.
Perhaps there's some jobs around the house, or at work, perhaps it's a particular chore that you do get round to eventually but not without an internal war.  Perhaps it's something bigger than that and you just can't seem to find the time for it.
Think about your motives for not taking action or for habitually putting it off to the last minute - is it the feeling of not having enough time?  Is it because you just don't want to do it?  Or, is it that you think you work better under pressure?  Now consider whether it is actually that important to you and your life or whether you just feel obligated.
If it is something important to you - is it something you have done before?  How did you feel when you actually did it?  If it is new to you, what does the thought of doing it make you feel like?
Now examine your core reason behind not doing it - are there any fears at the heart of what you are not taking action?  How would you feel once you have done it?
If you really don't think it's important to you, then you may need to consider not doing it and not wasting your time and energy worrying about.  You may feel that others' expect you to do it and therefore you have to do it but no-one can make you do anything, it is your choice.  Take back your power and responsibility.  You may find it liberating to follow your own expectations and do things that are important to you, instead of trying to live up to your preconceived idea of what someone else expects of you.
If you realise that you truly do want to do something, then that is your choice.  Realising that you choose to do something, may help you to feel better about the task itself.  If we put too much pressure on ourselves, then our subconscious mind will often do its best to stop us from doing the task at hand.  This is because your thoughts and visions about doing it, create feelings of anxiety and fear, which then tells your subconscious mind that the task is a threat to you.  Anything that is a threat triggers the fight or flight instinct that is intended to protect us from physical danger.  To stop that reaction and enable you to take action, you need to view the task from a different perspective (step outside the box) and create a different emotional response.  By realising you have the power to choose what you do, you can alleviate the emotional response to the task so that you are not constantly fighting your subconscious when you think about doing it.
If it's something you have done before, you can visualise how you felt afterwards to connect the positive feeling to the activity so that your subconscious can realise that it is beneficial for you to do it.
If you need any help with re-teaching your brain and creating new positive responses to old situations, drop me an email and I'll be happy to give you some free initial advice.
Remember, you have the power to take control of your thoughts and feelings.  You are responsible for you and no-one else.  You always have a choice and once you are aware of this possibility, you can allow your mind the freedom to guide you towards that which is good and right for you.
