Think Responsibly

Who is in charge of you?

Have you ever blamed someone or something for how you feel?  'It's driving me crazy'...'He's making me feel bad'...'If she wasn't so horrible I wouldn't get angry'...

It's not a nice feeling when your buttons are pressed and you react to a person or situation without any conscious control.  You feel helplessly stuck and feelings of blame and resentment do you no good at all.  But you can't help the way you feel - can you?  It's not your fault is it?

Well, the answer is yes and no.  You are reacting on a subconscious program which has been triggered by the situation or person.  And the reaction you have, and the feelings attached to it, may not be the best to actually improve your situation or resolve the conflict. 

The good news is you have the ability to choose and undo your subconscious programming.  Our brains are not hard-wired as scientists once thought but more mouldable like a jelly.  We are conscious beings and have within our minds, the observer - the part of us that sees our reactions but is separate from them.  This part of us can help us to become aware of what our triggers are and how we are reacting to situations or people.  Once aware we can take a step back and decide whether there is a better way to feel and react.  We can choose in advance a reaction or behaviour that feels good and right for us.

Next time the trigger occurs we can practice stopping our reactions in their tracks and replacing them with the new behaviour that we chose earlier.  It may take a few goes; as any new habit takes a bit of trial, error and repetition to learn, but once we have successfully managed to stop the old behaviour and replace it with the new behaviour enough times it becomes 'second nature'.

You know that you can learn a new skill if it is of benefit to you (just like learning to drive), so why not take the same approach with who you are?  I want to inspire you to 'Think Responsibly' and challenge your subconscious programmings; many of which you won't have even chosen because they were formed before you were 7 (which is when you basically download beliefs, behaviours and attitudes from your parents/teachers...).

Just think that a lot of who you think you are - what you think you are stuck with - is not you at all and is something you can easily choose to change.  That's pretty empowering stuff isn't it?  And you don't have to do it alone.  Find ways that feel good and right for you to help you overcome thoughts and beliefs that hold you back.
